Riots at pro-Palestinian demonstration: First indictment

Around two weeks after riots at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Berlin-Neukölln, the first charges have been brought. The Berlin public prosecutor's office has charged a 25-year-old in accelerated proceedings, as a spokesperson for the authorities announced on Friday. The Italian is accused, among other things, of aggravated breach of the peace, attempted dangerous bodily harm and assault on law enforcement officers. He is said to have been part of a group of demonstrators who chanted anti-Semitic and anti-Israel slogans and threw stones and bottles at police officers at around 7.45 p.m. on October 18.

Following the terrorist attack on Israel by Islamist Hamas on October 7, there have been daily rallies and demonstrations in Berlin, especially by the pro-Palestinian community. Violence has occurred time and again. On October 17 and 18 in particular, there were violent clashes between demonstrators and the police.

The escalation of conflicts during these demonstrations has led to an increase in extremist rhetoric and criminal activities. Consequently, the call for justice grows louder as authorities investigate multiple incidents of crime, including assaults on law enforcement officers.
