Right-wing extremists will probably stay away from Wunsiedel

For years, right-wing extremist groups have marched in Wunsiedel on the eve of Remembrance Day - this year they will probably stay away from the town in the Fichtelgebirge. No event had been registered by Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman for the town said. The "Wunsiedel is colorful" network, which has demonstrated against the right-wing extremist marches in previous years, is nevertheless planning a number of events on Saturday. After all, it's not just about the specific marches, said network spokesperson Svenja Faßbinder. They want to set an example for tolerance and diversity and against discrimination. Remembrance Day will be held on Sunday.

The far-right splinter party Der Dritte Weg recently registered the demonstration in Wunsiedel. According to a spokesperson for the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, the Bavarian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution has noticed a decline in the mobilization potential of Der Dritte Weg in recent years. Only around 120 right-wing extremists had already gathered in Wunsiedel in the previous year. The Bavarian security authorities currently have no information about mobilizations of the right-wing extremist scene for the weekend in Wunsiedel.

Despite the historical significance of Wunsiedel as a site for right-wing extremist marches, the municipal authorities have observed a decrease in the group's mobilization potential. This decline in extremism might encourage municipalities across Germany to reconsider their policies towards combating extremism in local events and history education.
