Factions Gather - Right-wing extremist classification litigation initiated by AfD progenies

The young wing of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt region is pursuing legal action against the local domestic intelligence agency for labeling them as "firmly right-wing extremist." A case has been filed at the Administrative Court in Magdeburg, as confirmed by the Interior Ministry and JA-Saxony-Anhalt chairman Christian Mertens.

The domestic intelligence agency for Saxony-Anhalt had categorized the state branch of the AfD Youth as a "firmly right-wing extremist inclination" back in May 2023. They accused the group of promoting hateful views towards refugees, including pushing false narratives like the "alleged population exchange story."

Christian Mertens, the JA-Saxony-Anhalt chairman, expressed his concerns about the agency being used as a tool to silence opposition on Monday. He said, "We are to be stigmatized." He explained that the organization now has the opportunity to examine the files and understand the allegations made against them.

The 'secured right-wing extremist' classification grants the domestic intelligence agencies more flexibility in determining their investigative approaches. The AfD in Saxony-Anhalt is also suing to challenge this label, which is reportedly based on numerous anti-Muslim, racist, and even anti-Semitic statements made by its officials and elected representatives.
