Right-wing extremism at school: "Would do it again and again"

He was met with hostility and ultimately had to leave the school: Despite all the consequences, former Burg teacher Max Teske would write the incendiary letter again and again. "When you recognize grievances, it's simply your duty to address them," said Teske in an interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur. "And I think that we chose the right path back then, with all the consequences that we experienced. I would do it again and again."

In April, Teske and his colleague at the time, Laura Nickel, wrote an initially anonymous letter describing how they were confronted with right-wing extremism, sexism and homophobia on a daily basis at the school in Burg, Brandenburg. They were then met with hostility from the right. They eventually left the school.

Award for his commitment

Teske will receive the "Prize for Civil Courage - Against Right-Wing Extremism, Anti-Semitism and Racism" in Berlin on Thursday evening. The award is presented by the Friends of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It will be presented at a fundraising dinner to benefit the "Room of Names" project, which documents the biographies of victims of the Holocaust. According to the organizers, the 4000 euro prize will be awarded to him and his former colleague and pastor Pellio "for their courageous commitment against right-wing extremism and for founding the "School for More Democracy" alliance".

"The prize means a great deal to me, because it is of course recognition that you have publicly addressed something in a region that is not readily heard," said Teske. He was delighted to accept the award on behalf of all those who had been involved in South Brandenburg.

Despite facing hostility and needing to leave the school due to his outspokenness against right-wing extremism, Max Teske is still committed to the cause. His dedication has been recognized with an award for civil courage, specifically for his efforts against right-wing extremism and the establishment of the "School for More Democracy" alliance.
