Riedbahn renovation: Buses run from Mannheim to the airport

The general refurbishment of the Riedbahn will cause restrictions for travelers for a long time next year. There was great concern in Mannheim that it would be cut off from the international air hub in Frankfurt. Now there is a solution.

Restrictions for travelers - Riedbahn renovation: Buses run from Mannheim to the airport

During the work on the Riedbahn in January, shuttle buses will take passengers from Mannheim Central Station to Frankfurt Airport. Deutsche Bahn will then use this experience to develop its service during the general refurbishment of the Riedbahn, a busy route between Frankfurt and Mannheim, from summer 2024. Between July 15 and mid-December, nothing will be possible on the Riedbahn, as announced by Deutsche Bahn on Saturday.

The first closure will begin on January 1 and last until January 21. Preparatory work is planned during this time. From 4.45 a.m. to 10.45 p.m. (last departure), modern coaches will connect Mannheim Central Station with Frankfurt Airport every half hour. The route will take around an hour. Passengers can reportedly use the buses with long-distance tickets. The airport shuttles are registered in the DB information and booking systems.

"I am very pleased and grateful that Deutsche Bahn has responded to our urgent request and is maintaining a direct connection to Frankfurt Airport during the Riedbahn renovation," explained Mannheim's Lord Mayor Christian Specht (CDU). The direct connection to the international air hub in Frankfurt is of great importance for the economy and tourism in the region.

Passengers can travel between Mannheim and Frankfurt/Main main station without changing trains during the work on the Riedbahn. According to Deutsche Bahn, most long-distance trains will be rerouted via the Mainz-Worms-Mannheim/Ludwigshafen (Ludwigsbahn) and Frankfurt am Main-Darmstadt-Heidelberg (Main-Neckar-Bahn) lines, which run parallel to the Riedbahn. "So that as many trains as possible can run at the same speed on the alternative routes, the ICE/IC trains have to run a little slower," it said. This will extend the journey time by around half an hour.

All changes to passenger services have already been incorporated into the timetable, the railroad company added. The connections during the Riedbahn renovation are available in the electronic information media and in the DB Navigator app for smartphones.
