State of health - Rhino bull Kalusho euthanized at Frankfurt Zoo
He was the only black rhino in Europe and part of Frankfurt Zoo for 30 years - now rhino bull Kalusho has died at the age of 37. The animal was euthanized on Wednesday due to his poor state of health, as the zoo announced on Thursday.
The bull had lost weight in recent months and had become increasingly passive. He was also limited by osteoarthritis. "Yesterday things got so bad that we had to make the decision to euthanize him sooner than expected," said zoo director Christina Geiger.
Kalusho's death marks the end of southern black rhino husbandry in Europe. It is still unclear what will happen to the rhino husbandry in Frankfurt.
