Flood - Rhine water levels rise: Restrictions on shipping

Due to the current rainfall and the thaw in its southern catchment area, the water levels on the Rhine will continue to rise in the new week. This was announced by the flood warning service of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment on Monday. Some areas of the banks could be flooded, said a spokesperson. Depending on how much more it rains in the coming days, flooding is possible on the Upper Rhine, which statistically occurs every two to five years. A biennial flood is to be expected on the Middle Rhine.

At the Maxau gauge near Karlsruhe on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate, a rise to 7.80 to 8.30 meters is expected from Tuesday. At the Mannheim and Mainz gauges, a rise to the level of a two-year flood is expected. In Koblenz, the water level is expected to exceed 6.00 meters on Tuesday.

Municipalities in various parts of the country are taking safety precautions. For example, the Koblenz fire department began building a flood protection wall in some areas on Sunday. In addition, the city began erecting dam beams in an existing protective wall and closed flood protection gates on Monday, according to the city of Koblenz. Stopping is prohibited at certain parking lots near the river.

There were already restrictions on shipping on Monday: High water mark I was exceeded at the Maxau gauge, where ships have to travel at reduced speed and in the middle of the fairway. Level II is expected to be exceeded there on Tuesday, at which point shipping traffic will have to be stopped completely.

The water levels on the Moselle are currently stagnating, it was reported. By the middle of the week, however, the water level in Trier could exceed 6.00 meters again. The water levels on the Nahe, Glan and Sieg rivers fell on Monday. There, as on the Lahn, it is unlikely that flood-relevant water levels will be reached.

The German Weather Service (DWD) is expecting showers and mild temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday.
