Flood - Rhine water levels continue to rise

Rain and thaw are causing the water levels of the Rhine to rise further. The maximum levels on the Upper and Middle Rhine are expected to be reached between Thursday and Saturday, according to the Flood Forecasting Center of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment on Wednesday. According to the authority, flooded riverbanks are to be expected in some areas. Shipping traffic will continue to be restricted.

At the Maxau gauge near Karlsruhe, a maximum level of 8.30 meters is expected on Thursday - this would put the water level at the level of a flood that statistically occurs every five years. The Rhine will remain closed to shipping there, as high water mark II has been exceeded.

The mark is also expected to be reached in Speyer on Wednesday. In Mainz, Bingen and Koblenz, ships are only allowed to travel at a slower speed and in the middle of the Rhine due to the water level.

Various municipalities have already prepared for the floods. The city of Koblenz, for example, has erected flood protection walls and closed flood gates. In Ludwigshafen, the city park and the Rhine promenade were closed.

On the Moselle, the state office reported a low flood risk. According to the forecast, the Nahe, Glan, Lahn and Sieg rivers are also not expected to flood significantly.

While the German Weather Service (DWD) is expecting showers in some areas on Wednesday, there will only be localized drizzle on Thursday. Friday is expected to remain mostly dry.
