Water police - Rhine ship towed free near Bacharach
The stuck ship on the Rhine near Bacharach was towed free on Thursday afternoon. Part of the cargo had been pumped onto a second ship, said a spokesperson for the water police in Mainz. The Rhine was therefore free again for the ascent, but still closed for the descent. The traffic jam on the Rhine is to be cleared in an orderly fashion on Thursday.
The tanker loaded with 3,000 tons of diesel ran aground on Wednesday, according to the Mainz water police. The fuel had not escaped. The stern of the ship protruded into the navigation channel, so that the section of the Rhine from Bingen to Kaub was closed from Wednesday morning. No one was injured in the incident. The police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
