Germany's Prime Minister Boris Rhein from Hesse urges the quick implementation of a compulsory insurance for property damage in response to the recent floods in the south of the country. He spoke to the German Press Agency, stating that the federal government should step up and proceed with the mandatory insurance. "We're all aware that severe weather events are getting more frequent."

"Natural catastrophes, like storms or weather incidents, shouldn't push people into financial distress or force all taxpayers to bear the brunt of the cost," said the leader of the Conference of Minister-Presidents (MPK). "We states will once again raise the topic at the next MPK meeting on June 20 during Hesse's chairmanship and demand action from the federal government."

The states had already requested through the Bundesrat that the federal government submits a proposal for a federal legal regulation on the introduction of a mandatory insurance more than a year ago. A working group formed by the federal government to handle this matter should present its results before the next meeting of the Minister-Presidents and Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on June 20, according to the Federal Ministry of Justice. The gathering will then discuss the issue.
