Flood - Rhine peaks partly already reached
As a result of rain and thaw, the water levels on the Rhine have already peaked in some places - in others they are still rising. At the Maxau gauge on the Upper Rhine, the maximum level of 8.41 meters was already reached on Thursday, according to the flood forecasting center of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment on Friday. This means that the water level is between a flood that statically occurs every five to ten years. In Mannheim, the highest level (7.40 meters) is expected to be reached on Friday afternoon.
At the Mainz gauge, the highest water level (6.10 meters) is expected to be reached on Saturday. Experts also expect the flood peak in Koblenz on Saturday (6.00 to 6.20 meters). After that, water levels are expected to fall until at least the middle of next week.
In many places, river banks have already been flooded in the past few days. The city of Germersheim, for example, had warned citizens not to enter dykes and flooded areas. In Ludwigshafen, a riverside promenade and parts of the lower bank of the Rheingalerie were flooded. Flood protection walls were erected in many places and some areas of the riverbank were closed off.
The Rhine is currently closed to shipping at Maxau and Speyer. From Mannheim to Cologne, ships have to travel at a slower speed and preferably in the middle of the river. There could also be a closure for shipping traffic in Bingen early on Saturday morning, according to reports.
Flood experts expect water levels on the Moselle to fall from Friday. "The water levels on the other larger rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate are falling continuously. There is currently no acute risk of flooding on the smaller rivers either," it continued.
The German Weather Service (DWD) expects localized light rain or drizzle on Friday (today). On Saturday, it is expected to be foggy at first, but free of precipitation as the day progresses, according to a statement on Friday.
