Flood - Rhine peaks expected on Saturday
The last provisional highs on the Hessian section of the Rhine are expected to be reached on Saturday. The maximum level at the gauge in Mainz is expected to be reached on Saturday, the Darmstadt Regional Council announced on Friday. Water levels on the Upper Rhine are expected to fall until the middle of next week, it said.
Due to the flooding, the federal highway 42 near Oestrich-Winkel was closed in both directions on Friday, said a spokesperson for Hessen Mobil on Friday. A detour had been set up and signposted. In Wiesbaden, the fire department had set up a mobile flood protection wall.
There are still restrictions on shipping traffic on the Rhine. No ships are currently allowed to sail at the Maxau and Speyer gauges, and between Mannheim and Oberwinter they are required to slow down in the middle of the river.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, the situation has eased at the river gauges within Hesse.
