Weather - Rhine floods recede
The first winter flood of the Rhine is slowly receding in North Rhine-Westphalia. After peaking on Saturday, the water levels dropped at most measuring stations on Sunday. The level in Cologne, for example, was 7.22 meters at midday on Sunday, 15 centimeters lower than the day before. However, it still remained above the high water mark I of 6.20 meters. In Düsseldorf, the water level dropped to 6.89 meters and thus, contrary to previous forecasts, did not reach flood level I of 7.10 meters.
At flood level I, restrictions apply to shipping, for example a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour. Water levels are expected to fall further in the coming days.
Only on the Lower Rhine were rising water levels recorded on Sunday, in Emmerich for example by 22 centimetres to 6.64 meters. According to the forecast of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), however, the water level there should remain well below the high water mark I and fall from Monday.
Meteorologists are predicting only a little rain for the new week. According to the forecast by the German Weather Service (DWD), it will be cloudy in many places on Monday, but largely free of precipitation. Temperatures will reach 7 to 9 degrees. On Tuesday, there will also be thick clouds with temperatures remaining the same, and it may rain at times in the north-western half of the country.
