The military industry - Rheinmetall acquires Conti workers.
Rheinmetall Defense will be taking on up to 100 employees from Continental who are surplus to requirements at their current location. The two companies made this announcement in a recent intent statement, which was shared on Friday. The employees from Conti's Brake Works in Gifhorn will be transferred to Rheinmetall's facility in Unterlüß, located in the Lüneburg Heath. Rheinmetall is currently constructing a new munitions factory at this location.
In a statement, Rheinmetall's Human Resources Director, Peter Sebastian Krause, said, "All the pieces are falling into place here. We believe that the Continental employees possess exceptional qualities that will be invaluable to us at Rheinmetall." Rheinmetall also intends to inform employees at other Conti sites about potential opportunities within their organization.
Continental's Human Resources Director, Ariane Reinhart, said, "The vast changes happening within all industries necessitate cooperation." Rheinmetall has now become the third partner in Continental's initiative "From Work to Work." The goal of this initiative is to "provide employees at affected sites with new perspectives." Reinhart also mentioned that Conti plans to merge its sites in Schwalbach and Wetzlar in Hesse.
Continental had revealed almost a year ago that it would be shutting down its loss-making brake works in Gifhorn by the end of 2027. They have been actively seeking companies to absorb a portion of the 900 employees ever since then. Home appliance manufacturer Stiebel Eltron has already confirmed their intention to take on a section of the workers and produce components for heat pumps at the Gifhorn facility. Siemens Mobility is also looking to take up to 100 employees for their railway technology works in Braunschweig.
Rheinmetall has seen significant business growth due to the current surge in weapons demand, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The construction of a new munitions factory in Unterlüß began in February, and production is scheduled to commence next year. Unterlüß is Rheinmetall's largest production site, where they manufacture both munitions and military vehicles such as the infantry fighting vehicle Puma. At present, Rheinmetall has a workforce of 2500 at this location.
