Only a few days after Borussia Dortmund signed Rheinmetall as a new supporter in the German Ice Hockey League, Düsseldorf EG has announced a similar deal. The sponsorship deal will run for a year, as stated by DEG on Tuesday. Rheinmetall will advertise its name on the ice surface and on bands, but not on players' jerseys. A local paper, Rheinische Post, had reported on the agreement earlier.

In contrast to Dortmund's football club where the company is rumoured to pay a substantial sum in millions annually, DEG's deal involves a six-digit sum, as quoted by Rheinische Post. The eight-time German champion has searched for new sponsors due to increasing costs for quite some time.

Shortly after the announcement of the Rheinmetall agreement, Borussia Dortmund faced criticism for their decision to accept financial backing from a weapons manufacturer that engages with authoritarian states.

Rheinmetall has supported entities in Düsseldorf, where their headquarters are located, and in the vicinity for a long time. This includes the handball Bundesliga team Bergischer HC, the women's basketball team Capitol BasCats, and the Sportstadt Düsseldorf, which encourages local elite sports clubs.

"Rheinmetall is a traditional company and one of the most crucial and largest employers in the area. Consequently, it's natural for us to expand our partnerships," declared Harald Wirtz, DEG's managing director.
