Crime - Reward offered after destruction of nativity scene

Following the destruction of a nativity scene with life-size figures in Rüsselsheim, the local trade association has offered a reward of 2,500 euros for information leading to the conviction of the perpetrators. At the same time, Jan Boese, President of the Rüsselheim Trade Association of 1888, apologized in a statement published on Facebook and on the association's homepage for statements made in a previous communication with which the association had originally reacted to the incident. "An attempt was made to take the incident with humor and de-escalate it, which in retrospect must be considered inappropriate," explained Boese.

Unknown perpetrators had cut off the heads and some of the hands of the polystyrene figures and knocked them over. A passer-by had reported the destruction of the nativity figures early on Sunday morning. The police are investigating the damage to property and are also looking into the question of whether a religious background played a role in the crime.

The trade association that donated the nativity scene initially spoke of a "headless night" and a "macabre joke", to which other users reacted with great incomprehension. A police spokesperson also criticized the association's handling of the crime as strange. It was a deliberate criminal offense, even if the material damage was difficult to quantify.

According to Boese, his intention with the original message was "not to give the perpetrators the satisfaction of stirring up hatred and discord during the Christmas period. We see ourselves as an association that stands for all tradespeople, regardless of their nationality, faith or inclinations, and we stand up for democratic coexistence," he explained. Neither the perpetrators nor the motives are yet known, "and we would like to distance ourselves from any prejudgement in any direction".
