Reul as a witness in the "Child Abuse Investigation Committee"
North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) will testify on Friday (10 a.m.) as a witness in the "Child Abuse Investigation Committee" of the Düsseldorf state parliament. He is to explain to the committee the extent to which he was involved in the crime. According to its chairman Dietmar Panske (CDU), the committee of inquiry is hoping to gain insights into possible structural failings on the part of the police in NRW.
The years of sexual abuse at a campsite in Lügde, Lippe, on the state border with Lower Saxony, caused nationwide horror after the monstrous crimes came to light. Numerous children had been sexually abused and raped by several men over many years up until the end of 2018. The two main perpetrators were sentenced to long prison terms by the Detmold district court in 2019. The NRW state parliament had set up a committee of inquiry in 2019 and relaunched it during this legislative period to shed light on the role of the youth welfare offices in the region and the work of the police.
The Child Abuse Investigation Committee in Düsseldorf's Parliament is interested in understanding Minister Reul's involvement in the case, as he will testify as a witness regarding the crime. The committee aims to explore potential institutional failures in the police force of North Rhine-Westphalia, which failed to prevent years of sexual abuse and rape against numerous children at a campsite.
