Health - Return to compulsory masks? Situation in Berlin's clinics

According to a spokesperson, the Sana Klinikum Lichtenberg in Berlin has introduced a mask requirement due to a "sharp increase" in coronavirus cases. "The mask requirement applies throughout the hospital for patients, visitors, relatives and all employees," the spokesperson told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The obligation was already introduced on December 6. Patients must now wear a face mask outside their room.

Visitors with a cough, cold, hoarseness or similar should refrain from visiting the hospital, as the clinic informs on its website. Patients with a Covid-19 infection or those who require isolation should not be visited or only in consultation with the ward.

The number of people infected with coronavirus is currently high across Germany. According to a report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), around 24,000 Covid infections confirmed by PCR test were recorded two weeks ago. According to the RKI, around 7.1 million people suffered from an acute respiratory illness, regardless of whether the patient had seen a doctor or not.

According to the Berlin Hospital Association (BKG), wearing a face mask has only been recommended in most hospitals in Berlin to date. "With an increasing number of Covid infections, the mask requirement can be a good precautionary measure to reduce possible infections," said BKG Managing Director Marc Schreiner at the request of the German Press Agency. "We assume that the authorities are also considering a further, uniform approach."

The clinics in the capital are "highly sensitized" to the developments and will do everything appropriate to protect patients, employees and visitors, said Schreiner.
