Rettig at U21 game about Adeyemi: Now embrace him
Following Karim Adeyemi's recent withdrawal, DFB managing director Andreas Rettig expects the Dortmund player to return to the German U21 national team. The attacker, who had already been called up to the senior squad, had withdrawn from the last two youth team matches in order to stay with BVB. He had to take a lot of criticism for this.
"Now we have to give him a hug. He knows that he didn't behave well," Rettig told the broadcaster ProSiebenMaxx on the sidelines of the U21 team's European Championship qualifier against Poland on Tuesday evening in Essen. "I'm quite confident that his decision was a flash in the pan. Together with our friends from Dortmund, we will give him the guidance he needs."
The 21-year-old Adeyemi has already played in four senior international matches. Rettig emphasized on the sidelines of the U21 game: "This is the second most important men's team. Everyone should understand that as a springboard." Earlier, President Bernd Neuendorf of the German Football Association had already described Adeyemi's decision not to play as a mistake.
Rettig expressed his expectation for Adeyemi to rejoin the U21 team after his withdrawal, stating, "We have to give him a hug. He knows he didn't behave well." Further, Borussia Dortmund and DFB will collaborate to provide the necessary guidance for Adeyemi, as he continues to be a valuable asset in the second most important men's team, the German U21 squad.
