Retail trade - Retail collective bargaining protest planned in front of Ikea headquarters

In the deadlocked wage dispute in the retail and mail order sector, Verdi in Hesse is focusing on furniture retailer Ikea. This Saturday (11 a.m.), "several hundred" warning strikers from other retail companies are to demonstrate for more money and better working conditions in front of the German headquarters in Hofheim-Wallau, as the union has announced. At the same time, a meeting is planned in front of the Ikea store in Kassel.

Anyone who wants to be "not just on a superficial first-name basis" with all employees must ensure that the demands and needs of the employees are taken into account in the employers' offers, explained Marcel Schäuble, head of negotiations, in a statement. Ikea is playing an important role on the employers' side in the negotiations. According to Verdi, employees of the Esprit, H&M, Kaufland, Metro, Douglas, Penny, Primark, Rewe and Zara chains are also taking part in the warning strikes in Hesse.

Verdi is demanding at least 2.50 euros more per hour for retail employees and a duration of one year. Further demands will be made depending on the federal state. In the regional negotiations, the employers recently offered a ten percent increase plus an inflation adjustment bonus for a term of two years. The negotiations affect millions of employees.
