Elections - Result: CDU clearly ahead in European elections in Lower Saxony

The Lower Saxony Electoral Committee has finally confirmed the success of the CDU in the European election in the state. As the electoral committee chairwoman announced on Thursday, the CDU comes to a total of 31.4 percent, followed by SPD (19.5 percent), AfD (13.2 percent), and Greens (12.2 percent). The FDP did slightly better than the new Left-wing Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht with 4.5 percent. The Linke ended up with 2.1 percent, which is behind the Party Volt (2.2 percent).

At the election on June 9th, 64.1 percent of the approximately 6.2 million eligible voters in Lower Saxony participated. The voter turnout was 2.6 percentage points higher than in 2019.

The European election committee at the EU level is now expecting a strong representation from the CDU, given their success in the state election. The CDU's victory in Lower Saxony will undoubtedly impact their performance in the upcoming #EP2024 European elections. The city of Hanover, being a part of Lower Saxony, also saw a significant number of votes for the CDU in the recent state election. Additionally, the SPD, while not surpassing the CDU in Lower Saxony's European election, remains a prominent force in both state and European elections across Germany.
