Science - Restructuring at Fraunhofer CEM in Halle

The Fraunhofer Research Institute CEM in Halle will be integrated into the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) with its headquarters in Dresden as of the turn of the year. The Center for Economics and Management of Technologies (Center for Economics and Technology Management in English) will remain as a new branch of the Fraunhofer IKTS at the Halle location, according to the research institution.

Integration as a strategic decision

The CEM focuses on the sustainable and efficient use of materials and resources. Until now, the research center was the branch of the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy (IMW) in Leipzig. According to an IKTS spokesperson, the restructuring is also related to the partial closure of the IMW. In April, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft announced that the independence of the IMW would be dissolved.

Expansion of research capacities

At CEM, the research offering will be expanded and extended in the future, with a particular focus on technology development and technology transfer in the chemical and process industry. Another focus will be on the development and evaluation of regional and location-specific transformation concepts. Scientists at CEM will work closely with IKTS research groups on these research projects in the future. The IKTS has locations in Saxony (Dresden, Freiberg) and Thuringia (Jena, Hermsdorf and Erfurter Kreuz).

The integration is "a logical and consistent step, from which our partners, our customers, and not least Halle will benefit," said the President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Holger Hanselka. In addition, the integration of CEM into IKTS is a visible driver for customers and partners in the chemical and process industry.

  1. This strategic decision to integrate the Fraunhofer Research Institute CEM in Halle into the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) signifies a significant restructuring within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which will take effect at the turn of the year.
  2. The Future integration of CEM into IKTS, with its headquarters in Dresden, will not only affect the Thuringian location but also extend the research capacities of IKTS in Saxony-Anhalt.
  3. The expansion of research capacities at CEM will involve a focus on technology development and technology transfer in the chemical and process industry, as well as the development and evaluation of regional and location-specific transformation concepts.
  4. As a new branch of the Fraunhofer IKTS, the Center for Economics and Management of Technologies (CEM) in Halle will continue its research on the sustainable and efficient use of materials and resources, collaborating closely with IKTS research groups.
  5. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, with its headquarters in Munich, operates numerous research institutions in Germany, such as the Fraunhofer IKTS in Dresden, Saxony, and the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy (IMW) in Leipzig, Saxony-Anhalt.
  6. The announcement of the integration of CEM into IKTS followed the partial closure of the IMW, which was previously the host institution for CEM, indicating a shift in research focus within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
