Restrict secondments of teachers away from the classroom
With the reorganization of the State Institute for Schools and Media (Lisum), Brandenburg wants to deploy more teachers from specialist training in the classroom in future. At the same time, services at schools should no longer be provided by teachers, announced the Ministry of Education in Potsdam in response to a question from the CDU parliamentary group. In the past school year, slightly more teachers were again deployed outside the classroom than in the previous year.
According to the ministry's figures, a total of 674 civil servants and employees covered by collective agreements were employed in other departments or by another employer in the 2022/23 school year. This was two more teachers than in the previous school year and eight more than in the 2020/21 school year.
The number of so-called reduced hours, in which teachers worked on non-teaching activities, rose from around 6980 to 7110 in the past three school years. According to the ministry, these included working on educational policy projects, for example at memorial sites, or in health promotion or youth welfare organizations. The activities also include, for example, a main and specialist seminar management in teacher training.
In mid-July, Brandenburg declared its withdrawal from the joint teacher training program with Berlin and announced its own approach to teacher training, teaching development and quality assurance. The Lisum was founded by Brandenburg and Berlin in 2007. Previously, both states had their own state institutes.
According to the Ministry of Education, the new pedagogical institution is intended to increase synergy potential and reduce the number of seconded teachers in training. Measurable effects are expected from the concept for the new state institute in the coming year.
The reorganization of Lisum in Brandenburg aims to increase the deployment of teachers from specialist training in the classroom. To improve teacher training, Brandenburg has announced its own approach, withdrawing from the joint program with Berlin and establishing a new pedagogical institution.
