Following years of inactivity, the 170-meter-long seabridge in Rerik is undergoing renovation. Currently, the part walked on by pedestrians, known as the bridge superstructure, is being taken apart. Some wood planks and a portion of the railing have been removed. In the next construction phase, the concrete on the superstructure will be erased, as confirmed by Matthias Hübner, the head of Bauamt Neubukow-Salzhaff, in response to an inquiry on Thursday. Renovations commenced on May 21st.
"There's no more stagnation now," said Hübner. A tender for the concrete work will be released soon, followed by one for the replacement of the bridge superstructure. The foundations, known as foundation piles, will mostly stay in place, but will need to be lengthened so the seabridge maintains a consistent level from the land connection to the bridge head.
Four smaller bridge platforms, functioning as boat docking spots, will be torn down without replacement, alongside their foundation piles. The current estimation for the cost of demolition and reconstruction lies around 1.9 million euros.

After the completion of the remediation work on the Rerik pier, tourists can once again enjoy the scenic views of the Baltic seaside resort. The renovation of the pier, located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is crucial for attracting more visitors and boosting the local tourism industry in the municipalities surrounding the area. However, temporarily, some parts of the pier, like the boat docking spots, will be blocked for demolition and reconstruction processes.
According to Matthias Hübner, head of Bauamt Neubukow-Salzhaff, the foundations of the smaller bridge platforms will need to be lengthened to maintain a consistent level from the land connection to the bridge head. Removal of these platforms, along with their foundation piles, may create challenges for boat owners who used to dock in these areas during their visits to the popular Baltic seaside resort.
The city of Rerik will invest around 1.9 million euros in the demolition and reconstruction of the pier, ensuring that it remains an attractive and well-maintained destination for tourists seeking relaxation by the shores of the Baltic Sea.
