The restoration of the sailing school vessel, the "Greif," believed to be owned by the Hanseatic city of Greifswald, appears to be facing delays, as per the city's administration's reports. This alleged slowdown is attributed to the bankruptcy proceedings filed against Fosen Stralsund GmbH on Thursday, as the city announced.

At the moment, the "Greif" is undergoing a thorough restoration in the vast Volkswerft shipbuilding facility in Stralsund. Yet, unexpectedly on the day prior, Stralsund city terminated the lease agreement with Fosen Werft GmbH, which encompassed the shipbuilding hall.

Back in February, bankruptcy proceedings were instigated against Norwegian Fosen Yard AS. At that time, it was revealed that Fosen Stralsund was not implicated in the bankruptcy proceedings.

Currently, the restorations on the "Greif" are approximately 75% complete, according to sources from Greifswald. The remaining tasks involve fixing the hull, sealing the main deck, and installing the masts.

Once a trustee is appointed for Fosen Stralsund GmbH, Greifswald intends to ascertain whether and how the steelwork on the "Greif" can be resumed. If a new contractor becomes necessary to continue the work, Greifswald is prepared to take action. It is anticipated that the renovation schedule will be significantly extended as a result. Initially, it was projected that the "Greif" would resume sailing in 2025.

A sum of 4.65 million euros has been allotted for the comprehensive restoration of the "Greif," as confirmed by city officials. The schooner brig is a nationally significant technical monument. Besides the federal government, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and the city of Greifswald, as the vessel's owner, contributions are also made by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, Sparkassen foundations, and other benefactors in support of the renovation project.

Despite the restoration of the "Greif" being primarily handled in Stralsund, it's the city of Greifswald that's closely monitoring its progress, as revealed by their respective sources. The upcoming appointment of a trustee for Fosen Stralsund GmbH could significantly impact the resumption of steelwork on the "Greif" in Greifswald.
