"Respect, but no fear": Darmstadt wants to reward fans

SV Darmstadt 98 do not want to lose touch with the non-relegation places in the Bundesliga. A win against weakening Wolfsburg on Saturday would help.

Bundesliga - "Respect, but no fear": Darmstadt wants to reward fans

SV Darmstadt 98 wants to reward its loyal supporters with three points in the last Bundesliga home game of the year. "We want to give our fans a home win. That's our aim," said Torsten Lieberknecht ahead of Saturday's match (3.30pm/Sky) against VfL Wolfsburg.

The team at the bottom of the table has high hopes against the weakening Lower Saxons, without underestimating their opponents. Lieberknecht attested his fellow coach Niko Kovac a very good job despite the current situation and criticism. "There are teams whose style of play could suit us to get a three-pointer. But we mustn't forget that VfL are a team with a good individual line-up and a large squad. We have respect, but no fear," said the 50-year-old.

His approach will be to play courageously and with a forward focus, while bringing the necessary aggression and security to the pitch in the rest of the defense. He is optimistic about the recent performance in Heidenheim. "Because we increasingly found our way forward there. We had a good structure," said Lieberknecht. The defeat was therefore disappointing, but he has put it behind him. "It's our duty to get back up, straighten our crown and then gather new energy heading into the new matchday," he emphasized.

With a win, the Lilies could put themselves in a better starting position in the relegation battle. Nevertheless, nobody at the promoted team is complaining about the current situation. The team knows that it will lose more games than in the last two years. "That's why we have to be able to withstand a lot this season and need great resilience. I know that we will pick up points, even against opponents where nobody expects us to," said Lieberknecht.

In terms of personnel, he still has major problems. In addition to the injuries, Fraser Hornby is expected to be out for several months due to ankle surgery. But Lieberknecht is not complaining. "We're on our last legs. But as long as we can still whistle, we're still alive," he said.
