Approximately 1.8 million people in Saxony-Anhalt are called to cast their votes in the European elections and the local elections taking place today. This is the first time that 16- and 17-year-olds are allowed to vote in the European elections. Polling stations are operational from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, during which time election officials will tally the votes for the European elections.

Back in 2019, the CDU claimed the most votes in the European elections in the region with an impressive 23.2% share. The AfD came in second with 20.4%, with the Left claiming 14.4%, the SPD 12.6%, the Greens 9.2%, and the FDP with 4.9%. A staggering total of 998,400 voters exercised their right to vote, resulting in a 54.7% voter turnout rate. This number represents a significant jump compared to the turnout rate of just 43% in the 2014 European elections.

On this particular day, Kreistages, Stadt- and Gemeinderäte, as well as Ortschaftsräte, and Ortsvorsteher will be re-elected. This process impacts all eleven district councils and the three free cities' city councils. There are elections for Gemeindecouncils and city councils in 101 unitary communities, as well as for Ortschaftsräte and Ortsvorsteher in approximately 970 municipalities. The elections' type - either for a community council or Ortsvorsteher - is determined by the municipality's constitution.

Additionally, district and city council seats for the district councils and the councils of member municipalities of the associations will be elected. This means that nearly 720 district and city council seats in the free cities, around 4400 seats in the community and association councils, and 6000 seats in the Ortschaftsräten will be filled. In some cases, there might be mayoral elections, such as in Querfurt, Saalekreis, and Zielitz, Landkreis Börde.

Upon the closing of the polling stations at 6:00 pm, the election officials will begin counting the votes for the European elections. The first tentative outcome of the European elections is expected around 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, preliminary results for the elections of district councils and city councils in the free cities could be available around 8:00 pm.
