Resident in custody after fire in asylum seekers' accommodation

Following a fire in a shelter for asylum seekers in Upper Bavaria, a resident of the facility is in custody for attempted murder. The 32-year-old Afghan is suspected of having deliberately started the fire in the building in Reit im Winkl (Traunstein district), the police announced. A judge at Traunstein district court therefore ordered his detention on Wednesday on charges of aggravated arson and attempted murder. The background and motive for the crime are currently under investigation, said a police spokesman.

A policewoman was slightly injured by smoke inhalation during the fire on Tuesday. The police estimated the damage to be in the high six-figure range, "possibly even more". The investigation is still ongoing.

The fires in Upper Bavaria have led to several emergencies, with this incident being a particularly serious one. The fire in the asylum seekers' accommodation resulted in aggravated arson charges and attempted murder allegations against a resident.
