Research: Workers are putting in more hours than prior to the coronavirus outbreak
In Germany, there's been an unprecedented surge of individuals working relentlessly, even during an economic recession, as pointed out by Enzo Weber from the IAB. Yet, a continuous upward trend isn't guaranteed. "Employment expansion is plainly levelling off, the part-time workforce is climbing towards almost 40%, and the number of extra hours worked has plummeted to a record low," Weber elaborated.
The workforce counted in the second quarter stood at 46.1 million individuals, marking a minor 0.4% advance compared to the previous year. The average hours worked showed a minor uptick, while labor productivity took a hit. The part-time workforce experienced a "significant" jump of 0.5 percentage points, reaching 39.8% in the second quarter of this year.
Despite the economic recession, German workers continue to show resilience, even in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, the Coronavirus outbreak has contributed to a decrease in the number of extra hours worked, reaching a record low.
