In the USA, it is better to have an international driving license with you, as the German driving license alone does not have to be recognized there.

Requirements for an international driving permit.

This ordinary gray card is an international driver's license, crucial for driving outside Europe with a car. For the most part, a German driver's license suffices when cruising around Europe. But for journeys to Albania, Moldova, or Russia, the Automobile Club Europe (ACE) recommends getting an international driver's license. It's compulsory in many countries across Asia, Africa, or Latin America, and for travel to the USA, the ACE suggests this extra documentation, as the German driver's license may not be recognized there.

In most countries, the international driver's license issued in Germany is valid for three years. However, in countries like Egypt, Mexico, Argentina, or Chile, it's valid for only a year. Once the validity period ends, reapplication is necessary.

Application process

Before embarking on a trip with your own vehicle or renting one on-site, it's prudent to check early with the Foreign Office if an international driver's license is mandatory - the info is available in the online travel advice for each country provided by the Foreign Office. Requirements for this supplementary document may differ based on the federal state, which makes advanced planning essential.

The Automobile Club Europe (ACE) states that for application, a valid EU driving license, a passport or identity card, and a current biometric photo are typically necessary. The cost is roughly 15 to 20 euros. The international driver's license is usually issued upon application.

Note: If you still have an old paper driver's license, it will be converted into an EU driving license when the international driver's license is issued. However, this conversion no longer costs only 25 euros, and the processing time can take several weeks, according to the ACE.

Keep in mind: You can't apply for an international driver's license at the German embassy during your trip. It must be done in your home community.

Obtaining an international driver's license in Europe requires a valid EU driving license, a passport or identity card, and a current biometric photo, with fees typically ranging from 15 to 20 euros. It's important to note that applying for an international driver's license cannot be done at a German embassy during travel; instead, it must be done in your home community.
