Republican Party Convention: Former Trump rivals expected on stage
Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, was not expected to be at the Democratic Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Four months ago, she had said that the USA would not survive "another four years of chaos" under Trump. But after the shooting at Trump in the US state of Pennsylvania, the cards have been reshuffled: Unity is in demand.
Trump survived the attack at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday by a narrow margin. The ex-President was hit by a bullet near his ear.
On Monday, the ex-President with a bandage on his right ear attended the convention site in Milwaukee. He waved to the participants who cheered enthusiastically for him, while in the background the patriotic song "God Bless America" by Country Singer Lee Greenwood played. Trump was there with Senator J.D. Vance, whom he had recently named as his vice presidential candidate.
Trump was officially endorsed as the candidate for the presidential election by the delegates at the Democratic Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday - a mere formality, after the right-wing populist had won the party primaries by a landslide. His acceptance speech for the nomination was scheduled to be held on Thursday.
Trump attempted to gain additional support from independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with a call, to see if he would abandon his candidacy and support him instead - without success. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is the son of the former Attorney General and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, who was shot to death in 1968, like his brother John F. Kennedy before him.
In a leaked online recording of the conversation between Trump and Kennedy on Tuesday, Trump describes the feeling of the bullet grazing his ear as "feeling like the biggest mosquito in the world".
Meanwhile, Democrats were pushing for Joe Biden to secure his re-nomination before the official Democratic Party convention in August. Although the shooting on Trump had temporarily silenced discussions among Democrats about Biden's health suitability as a presidential candidate again, the issue was still simmering beneath the surface.
Biden's campaign team insisted that a virtual nomination meeting was necessary before the convention on August 19, as the Republican-governed state of Ohio had set a deadline for candidates. Otherwise, Biden threatened that his name would not appear on the ballot, it was reported.
Trump and Biden had their first televised debate before the presidential election in November at the end of June, which Biden performed poorly in. Since his disastrous performance at the TV debate, Biden has been confronted with an increasingly heated debate in his Democratic Party about his mental fitness for the presidency.
