Danger of terrorism - Reports: US military in Europe on heightened alert

At US military bases in Germany and other European countries, there is heightened alertness regarding terror threat according to media reports. The Pentagon reportedly called for the second highest security level, Force Protection Condition Charlie, at the bases over the weekend, according to US broadcaster CNN, citing two unnamed government officials. This security level, Force Protection Condition Charlie, is declared when there is imminent threat of a terror attack.

"There are credible reports pointing to an attack on US bases in the coming week or so," Fox News quoted a defense official. The Pentagon initially declined to comment.

It remained unclear what kind of threat was alleged. The defense official quoted by Fox News reportedly told the broadcaster that it was not related to the parliamentary elections in France.

The responsible command of the US military (Eucom) with headquarters in Stuttgart refused to comment on specific protective measures for the troops to CNN's inquiry. However, a spokesperson said that Eucom constantly checks a multitude of factors that are relevant for the safety of US military personnel abroad. "In the course of these efforts, we often take additional measures to ensure the safety of our military personnel," the spokesperson said. No details were given.
