Report: Raúl and Schreuder candidates for coach at Union
According to a report in the "Bild" newspaper, former world-class footballer Raúl is among the extended group of candidates in the search for a coach at 1. FC Union Berlin. However, according to the newspaper, a more concrete lead should lead to former Hoffenheim coach Alfred Schreuder, as the newspaper reported on Friday. Oliver Glasner, coach of Eintracht Frankfurt until the summer, is also still a candidate for the team at the bottom of the table.
Union and long-time successful coach Urs Fischer parted ways last week after 14 games without a win. The interim coaching team of Marco Grote and Marie-Louise Eta will sit on the Köpenickers' bench for the Bundesliga match against FC Augsburg on Saturday (3.30pm/Sky).
Raúl knows the Bundesliga from his time as a player. He played for Schalke 04 from 2010 to 2012. He is also said to have been a coaching candidate for the Royal Blues at the beginning of October, but declined according to a report in "Sport Bild". The 46-year-old currently coaches Real Madrid's second team.
Schreuder coached Hoffenheim in the 2019/2020 season, but had to leave on matchday 30. His tenures at Ajax Amsterdam and Al-Ain FC in the United Arab Emirates also ended after less than a year.
Union president Dirk Zingler had announced a careful process in the search for a coach. Part of the profile should be that the coach speaks German well and identifies with the club's values.
Raúl's coaching candidacy for 1st FC Union Berlin is noteworthy given his experience in the Bundesliga, having played for Schalke 04 from 2010 to 2012. If Alfred Schreuder becomes the Union's coach, he would be returning to the Bundesliga after his brief stint with Hoffenheim in the 2019/2020 season.
