Federal Ministry of Agriculture - Report on the future of German Baltic Sea fisheries expected
Since last year, a mission statement commission set up by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture has been looking into the future of Baltic Sea fishing. The final report is to be presented to the public in Berlin on Monday (12.30 pm). Authorities, associations and scientists are represented on the commission, which has 30 members.
The fish stocks and the ecological state of the Baltic Sea are in a poor state. German Baltic Sea fishermen will only be allowed to catch a small amount of cod and herring in 2024. The EU member states decided in October that herring may still largely not be targeted in the western Baltic Sea. However, there are exceptions for small boats.

The commission investigating the future of Baltic Sea fishing is based in Schleswig-Holstein, one of the German states bordering the Baltic Sea. The anticipated report from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture is expected to include strategies for improving the health of mecklenburg-vorpommern's fishing industry, a fellow Baltic Sea coastal state. The future of German Baltic Sea fisheries will greatly depend on the findings and recommendations presented in Berlin. Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture has been encouraging initiatives to promote sustainable fishing practices in the Baltic Sea, envisioning a more resilient future for the industry as a whole.
