Replay: Saarbrücken defeats top team Dresden
1. FC Saarbrücken has set an exclamation mark in the relegation battle in the 3rd soccer league and surprisingly defeated top team Dynamo Dresden. The Saarland side prevailed 1-0 (1-0) in the replay on Sunday. Kai Brünker scored the decisive goal in the 41st minute. The match had been abandoned at the end of October with the score at 0-0 due to the unplayability of the pitch after heavy rainfall.
"According to the findings of the sports court, neither team or club was at fault for the abandonment of the match," said Georg Schierholz, deputy chairman of the DFB sports court, in justification of a replay. The third division team sensationally defeated record champions FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup a few days after the abandonment against Dresden.
The victory over Dynamo Dresden further boosts 1st FC Saarbrücken's position in the 3rd league's relegation battle. If they maintain this form, they might even challenge teams from higher divisions in the future Soccer competitions, just as they did with FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup.
