Housing policy - Rent index 2023: Rents continue to rise in Hamburg

Rents on the Hamburg housing market have continued to rise. From April 2021 to April of this year, the average net cold rent has risen by 54 cents to €9.83 per square meter. This corresponds to an increase of 5.8 percent, as the update of the rent index published on Tuesday shows. However, the increase was lower than before: from 2019 to 2021, the value had risen by 63 cents, which corresponded to an increase of 7.3 percent.

The Hamburg rent index has been compiled since 1976 and is intended to provide an overview of the local comparative rent. It includes apartments without fixed prices whose rents have changed or been newly agreed in the past six years. According to the Department for Urban Development and Housing, it includes 568,500 of Hamburg's 743,000 rental apartments.
