Düsseldorf bestows the Heine Prize upon Israeli scribe David Grossman this year. This esteemed literary accolade is given to "one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Israeli literature, who has demonstrated a dedication to comprehension and harmony, far beyond the Middle East peace process," as per Düsseldorf's Mayor Stephan Keller. The prize comes with a hefty sum of 50,000 euros.

Upon learning of the accolade, Grossman reacted joyously over the phone: "Positive news amidst so much negativity," stated Düsseldorf's press release. Born in Jerusalem in 1954, the laureate is a distinguished journalist, peace advocate, and author, whose works often delve into the ramifications of war and violence that permeate daily life in Israel.

The jury commended Grossman's prose for its profound insight and empathetic connection with people grappling with seemingly unsolvable disputes. In his public addresses and essays, he continually advocates for peace and reconciliation in the Middle East.

The prize, founded by the city's capital to honor natively-born Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), will be presented for the 23rd time. The precise date for a celebratory event around Heine's birthday in December will be announced at a later date.
