Renowned film festival: Tricia Tuttle becomes new Berlinale director
"Tricia Tuttle brings 25 years of film and film festival experience with her," explained Roth. Under her leadership, the London Film Festival has not only seen an increase in audience numbers, but has also gained in international profile and importance. "She has countered the challenges of digitalization with creative strategies and made the festival more colourful, more diverse and more accessible," said Roth, praising the future director. Tuttle is "the right choice" to lead the Berlinale into a successful future.
Tuttle comes from North Carolina in the south of the United States, where she began her career as a guitarist with the band June. The current management duo of the film festival, Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, will continue to organize the next Berlinale in February 2024. Both have been running the festival since 2020, but Rissenbeek has already announced her intention to step down next spring.
Tuttle called the Berlinale a "pioneer among A-list film festivals - welcoming and inclusive and brimming with a breathtaking variety of films". This festival shows that cinema is "an extremely vibrant, often magical art form that can change the way we see the world and how we understand each other".
With its decision, the KKB Supervisory Board followed the recommendation of the selection committee. The members of the commission are Oscar-winner Edward Berger, actress Sara Fazilat, the managing director of the German Film Academy, Anne Leppin, producer Roman Paul, the head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, Florian Graf, and Roth.
The Berlinale is the most important film festival in Germany and one of the most important film festivals in the world. Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) emphasized that the film festival has more than 70 years of tradition and is of great importance for the capital, both artistically and socio-politically as well as economically. "It must be our incentive and goal to ensure that the Berlinale remains one of the world's top-class film festivals in the future," explained Wegner.
The new jury president of the Berlinale 2024 will be Kenyan-Mexican actress, director, producer and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o. The Berlinale made the announcement on Monday. Nyong'o received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2014 for her role in the slave drama "12 Years A Slave".
