Renovation of the Rhine bridge near Waldshut delayed

The closed railroad bridge between the towns of Waldshut-Tiengen in southern Baden-Württemberg and Koblenz in Switzerland will not be reopened before mid-2024. On Wednesday, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced that the repair of the Rhine bridge, which is contaminated with asbestos, will take significantly longer than planned. The renovation of the over 150-year-old structure had begun in April. The reopening had already been postponed from October to December.

SBB and Deutsche Bahn (DB) want to clarify in mid-2024 when trains can run on the bridge again. "The reopening of the line is currently open," said SBB. Travelers between Waldshut and Koblenz will therefore still have to change to replacement buses, which run every 15 minutes during rush hour.

The delayed renovation of the Rhine bridge impacts the overall railroad transportation in the region. Despite the repair works on the asbestos-contaminated bridge commencing in April, the anticipated reopening of the railroad line between Waldshut-Tiengen and Koblenz has been pushed back to mid-2024.
