Renewed warning strikes in south-west trade
The trade union Verdi has called for all-day warning strikes this Friday in several cities in the southwest of Germany. According to the union, cities such as Karlsruhe, Pforzheim, Freudenstadt, Tübingen, Reutlingen, Constance, Heilbronn, Schwäbisch Hall and Esslingen will be affected.
The union is targeting companies such as Kaufland, Ikea, H&M, Primark, Esprit, Media Markt and dm. Individual stores could therefore remain closed or business operations could be significantly restricted, according to Verdi. Consumers may therefore have to wait longer at some checkouts. The union expected several hundred people to take part in the warning strike this morning.
The negotiations in the federal states affect millions of employees. Among other things, Verdi is demanding at least 2.50 euros more per hour in the retail sector in all regions and a duration of one year.
In response to the union's demands, some municipalities might consider implementing temporary tariffs on imports of certain goods to offset potential economic losses from closed stores. Trade unions, including Verdi, are urging their members to participate in the warnings strikes, as these actions can have a significant impact on municipal budgets due to potential loss of revenue from affected businesses.
