Renewables cover more than half of electricity consumption for the first time

According to the figures, this is the first time that the share of renewable electricity has exceeded the 50% mark for an entire year. The share of renewable electricity was particularly high in July (59%), May (57%) and October and November (55% each).

In June, electricity generation from photovoltaics reached a new all-time record of 9.8 billion kilowatt hours. Electricity generation from onshore wind energy reached a new record of 113.5 billion kilowatt hours for the year as a whole.

Kerstin Andreae, Chairwoman of the BDEW Executive Board, said: "The figures show that we are on the right track." In order to achieve "the second 50 percent", however, politicians must continue to "consistently remove all obstacles to the expansion of renewables", Andreae demanded.
