Bundesliga - Reminder ahead of Frankfurt's cup tie at Bayern-Schreck
After Frankfurt's third 2:1 defeat at the end of a completely botched soccer week, national goalkeeper Kevin Trapp issued a warning to his team in Augsburg. Looking ahead to the upcoming DFB Cup round of 16 at third-division club and Bayern conquerors 1. FC Saarbrücken, the captain said on Sunday evening: "We have a difficult game on Wednesday. But that's when we can decide where we're heading." The Hesse side's current results trend does not look good.
In double-digit sub-zero temperatures in Augsburg, the Hessians were clearly inferior to their opponents for long stretches of the game. "Augsburg simply brought a different emotionality to the pitch, had a different bite to win the game," commented coach Dino Toppmöller. It was only after Augsburg captain Ermedin Demirovic's penalty, which was saved by Trapp, and the goal that followed shortly afterwards to make it 1-2 that the Frankfurt team reared its head again. But Toppmöller admitted after the final whistle: "The equalizer would not have been deserved. Augsburg gave us a run for our money in every respect, in terms of tackling and emotion."
Sporting director Markus Krösche also criticized the inadequate performance. "Augsburg were clearly the more aggressive and active team. We have to exert more pressure going forward again, play more purposefully and consistently and at the same time regain more stability in defense," said Krösche. "We didn't show up until 1:2," was Trapp's clear verdict.
Former Augsburg player Philipp Max, who scored FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen's own goal with a sharp cross, also looked ahead to the cup tie: "Now we have to show a different face in Saarbrücken and get through to the quarter-finals." Toppmöller takes a similar view to Trapp: "It's up to us how we go into the game, how we take it on. Saarbrücken will be highly motivated. But so should we, because we also have a dream. The aim is to "give it our all and get through to the next round" in an unbelievably great competition.
