Remembrance on Remembrance Day in Lower Saxony

In Lower Saxony, the victims of war and tyranny were commemorated on Remembrance Day on Sunday. Wreaths were laid and speeches given in many towns and communities. In Stade, for example, around 200 people gathered at the memorial at the garrison cemetery, according to the district. "Even at this time, we are shocked by the dramatic situation in Israel and the endless suffering there," said District Administrator Kai Seefried (CDU) in his speech. In Wilhemshaven, all flags on the town hall tower were flown at half-mast.

Younger people were also involved in many of the events on Remembrance Day. Pupils from various schools in Hildesheim had already laid bouquets of flowers at war graves in the northern cemetery on Thursday. In Loxstedt, young people organized the commemorative event for the district of Cuxhaven.

The victims of war and tyranny are commemorated every year on Remembrance Day. The national day of remembrance - always two Sundays before the first Advent - has been celebrated in Germany since 1919, when it was introduced by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (German War Graves Commission), which was founded in the same year. Originally, the aim was to show solidarity with the bereaved families of the victims of the First World War. Today, the Federal Republic of Germany commemorates all victims of war and tyranny.

The commemoration of war victims extends beyond the First World War, as the country honors all victims of conflict and tyranny on Remembrance Day. Throughout history, conflicts and wars have resulted in significant losses and suffering.
