Remembrance Day: Central commemoration in the state parliament in Magdeburg
The dead of wars and victims of tyrannies will be commemorated on Sunday (11.00 a.m.) with a central memorial service for the Volkstrauertag in Magdeburg. According to the German War Graves Commission, this year's Remembrance Day is marked by several wars and violent conflicts in the world. "This shows in a shocking way that peace cannot be taken for granted." Christoph Volkmar, Director of the Magdeburg City Archives and Chairman of the Historical Commission for Saxony-Anhalt, is to give the commemorative speech. The President of the State Parliament, Gunnar Schellenberger, will deliver the traditional remembrance of the dead.
After the memorial service, wreaths will be laid at the West Cemetery in Magdeburg. According to the Volksbund, wreaths will be laid at the war graves in Magdeburg the day before, on Saturday. Larger and smaller commemorative events at cemeteries or memorial sites as well as church services are planned in numerous places throughout Germany. A central hour of remembrance is planned in the plenary chamber of the German Bundestag (1.30 pm).
The commemoration focuses on the history of wars and their tragic consequences, specifically the deceased and suffering caused by tyrannies and violent conflicts around the world. During Remembrance Day, the German War Graves Commission highlights several such conflicts as reminders that peace is not an unquestionable privilege.
