Remembering the victims of Nazi crimes in Oldenburg

Oldenburg wants to commemorate the victims of Nazi crimes with plaques and steles. In the coming weeks, eleven memorial signs will be placed at eye level at the last homes and businesses of persecuted Jews, the city announced. At the start on Thursday, the fate of Oldenburg merchant Siegfried Samuel Weinberg, who died in the Sobibór extermination camp in Poland in 1943, will be remembered in this way.

In Oldenburg, the city and the Oldenburg Community Foundation, in cooperation with the Werkstattfilm association, have been installing memorial signs at eye level since 2021. They are intended to provide information about the people concerned, give details of their lives and, where possible, show pictures. The wall plaques and steles have so far adorned 16 houses in Oldenburg, with eleven more to follow by Auschwitz Memorial Day on January 27. On Thursday, memorial signs are to be placed at the site of Siegfried Weinberg's former honey and wax shop and at his family's home address.

According to Oldenburg, it is the third city with such memorials - after Munich and Ingolstadt. The city is thus following the wishes of the Jewish community in Oldenburg, which prefers memorials at eye level to stumbling blocks. Stolpersteine are memorial plaques laid in the ground to commemorate victims of Nazi tyranny.

The city of Oldenburg is enhancing its memorials for Nazi victims with the addition of eleven eye-level plaques and steles, becoming the third city to adopt this approach, following Munich and Ingolstadt. These new monuments will provide information about the lives and histories of persecuted Jews, including old merchant Siegfried Samuel Weinberg, who tragically perished in the Sobibór extermination camp.
