Relief in Wolfsburg: "A small step, not a big one"

After five games without a win, VfL Wolfsburg have finally won again in the Bundesliga. Coach Niko Kovac was correspondingly relieved after the 2:1 (1:0) win against Champions League participants RB Leipzig on Saturday.

"It was a passionately fought victory - but a happy one. Especially as we had a goalkeeper in Koen Casteels who put in a world-class performance today. You need that in the situation we were in," said Kovac. "Football-wise, you can do a lot better. If you go by the statistics, we would have lost today. But ifs, ands and buts don't count. It's a small step, not a big one. The win was important. We're happy about that too."

Wolfsburg took the lead through Jonas Wind in the 9th minute. After around 20 minutes, Leipzig were overwhelmingly superior until the final whistle. Nevertheless, just 14 minutes after Yussuf Poulsen made it 1:1 (52'), the lucky Wolfsburg winner was scored by the Brazilian Rogerio (66').

Exactly 25 days earlier, VfL had already won 1-0 against Leipzig in the DFB Cup. "Wolfsburg doesn't seem to be our cup of tea at the moment," said RB coach Marco Rose. "I'm really angry about what we ended up with here today: nothing!"

VfL Wolfsburg's victory against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, where they emerged 2:1 winners, was significant for coach Niko Kovac's side, especially considering their recent five-game winless streak. The win was achieved despite Leipzig dominating play for much of the match, and it was goalkeeper Koen Casteels' excellent performance that proved crucial.

RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose expressed disappointment with his team's performance against VfL Wolfsburg in both the Bundesliga and DFB Cup, as they failed to secure a victory against their rivals, losing 1-0 in the cup and drawing 2-1 in the league.
