Ice hockey - Relegation-threatened DEG outclasses weak Sharks in Rhine derby
With its 115th derby win against the Cologne Sharks, Düsseldorfer EG has scored important points in the fight against the threat of its first relegation from the German Ice Hockey League. On Sunday, DEG outclassed their arch-rivals 7:1 (0:0, 3:0, 4:1) in the 240th Rhine derby and, after three defeats in the previous four games, regained some breathing space in the basement of the table.
In the duel between the two eight-time German champions, a double strike in the middle third paved the way for the second win in the second of four preliminary round derbies this season. Kevin Clark (30th minute) and Kenny Agostino (31st) scored within 25 seconds.
In front of 13,102 spectators in the sold-out Düsseldorf Arena, Nicolas Geitner (38th), two vice world champion Alexander Ehl (45th/53rd), Phil Varone (53rd) and Kohen Olischefski (54th) scored the other goals for DEG, who only managed their fifth three-point win in their 24th game of the season. For the completely disappointing Sharks, who are fighting for a direct play-off spot, only Louis-Marc Aubry (47) scored in overtime.
The Düsseldorfers thus maintained the gap to the DEL bottom team, the Iserlohn Roosters. Should the DEL2 champions fulfill the economic requirements for promotion next year, the team in last place in the DEL main round will be relegated.
