Relaxation signaled as evacuation wraps up on Friday.

Although water levels are still declining at a slow pace, hopeful signs of a lessening flood crisis emerge from Regensburg. On Thursday, the city officials declared that those living along Werftstraße on Danube Island can expect to return to their properties on Friday afternoon (2 p.m.).

Regensburg Headlines: News from the German City - Relaxation signaled as evacuation wraps up on Friday.

At present, the flood prevention measures are meant to shield the region from floods. But, given the weakened soil, aid workers are allowing water to stream past these defenses to prevent a sudden collapse of these protective measures.

This strategy of deliberately letting more water in has thus far succeeded in keeping the roads and flood barriers secure, the city shared. Nevertheless, people might not be allowed to come back to their houses on Thursday because the Donau water level and subterranean water level are only gradually dropping.

It's possible that things could shift on Friday, based on the latest flood projections, the city said Thursday. "We'll let everyone know right away if anything changes." As for now, the road will stay closed for bikers and vehicle drivers.

The city urged residents to be cautious and meticulously go over their rooms and apartments upon returning home, with attention to any possible cracks in ceilings and walls.
