Voting Process - Rehlinger, leader of the SPD, remarked, "It was unfortunate."

In the aftermath of the European election, Saarland's SPD party chairwoman and Minister President, Anke Rehlinger, expressed her dissatisfaction. She was unhappy that a Saarland SPD representative couldn't make it to the European Parliament and also regretted their historically the worst results, finishing behind the AfD. "We shouldn't look for silver linings here," she remarked to reporters. "This is simply unsatisfactory, or to put it bluntly, it's bad."

One major concern, she shared, was the performance of the AfD. However, she didn't see the need to berate voters for their choices yet. Instead, her focus was on finding ways to present a democratic and social democratic alternative that could resonate with people.

The CDU emerged as the strongest force in the Saarland despite experiencing some losses. The Christian Democrats received 29.3% of the votes, 3.2% down from the 2019 European election. The ruling SPD received 20.5% (a drop of 2.6%). "We're clearly the winners," noted the CDU party leader, Stephan Toscani. This result, according to him, offered a small boost for the state elections in 2027. He also interpreted the outcome as a vote of no confidence in the Berlin red traffic light government and a blow to Rehlinger and her SPD.
