Regional Synod of the North Church: Regional rabbi preaches for the first time

On Friday, the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany (Nordkirche) will meet in Lübeck-Travemünde for its two-day session. According to the synod, the opening service on Friday (10.00 a.m.) will focus on the issues of war and terror in the Middle East.

For the first time, a Jewish clergyman, the Mecklenburg State Rabbi Yuriy Kadnykov, will deliver the sermon at the opening service, said Dieter Schulz, Chief Press Officer of the North Church. "The state synod has already welcomed a state rabbi as a guest, but participating in the service and preaching is a first," said Schulz.

Another topic of the synod will be Christian-Islamic dialog. The representative of the North Church, Sönke Lorberg-Fehring, will report on his work with Christian and Muslim young people (Friday, 6 p.m.). The synod meeting will end on Saturday with a blessing (4.30 p.m.).

Despite the predominantly Christian focus of the synod, the inclusion of a Jewish rabbi in the opening service demonstrates the importance of interfaith dialogue within religion. This unprecedented event highlights the synod's commitment to fostering religious harmony and understanding, transcending the boundaries of Christianity and embracing a broader theological spectrum.
